John Clayton's travel article
Is “A Picture Worth A Thousand Words”?

P38 Lighting fighter plane at the Imperial War museum, Duxford

The phrase above is a cliché almost as old as, well Father Time. Then again, purists will tell you that the above phrase does NOT go that far back. Be that as it may, most people (especially travel journalists!) ARE familiar with those words.

“A Picture Worth A Thousand Words”?
THE ANSWERS

As John promised here are the answers to the four photos in his previous article, "Is A Picture Worth a Thousand Words?"

Eric Anderson
To the Marquesa Islands on the Freighter Aranui 3

the Aranui 3 off the Marquesa Islands
It’s an odd duck of a ship: a wide deck with two yellow painted cranes dangling over it and a six storey, or so, aft structure bringing up the rear like a mini skyscraper -- taller than the distance from the deck to the waterline. It’s the Aranui 3, the lifeblood to the Marquesas. Those islands, a cluster of volcanic terrain just below the Equator, lie almost 1000 miles from Tahiti.

Switzerland Tourism's Intellectual History: Born in the Romantic Movement

the town of Vevey on the shores of Lake Geneva
Despite Harry Lime’s assertion in Graham Greene’s “The Third Man” that Switzerland’s contribution to world culture is the cuckoo clock and chocolate, there is a long tradition of artistic achievement in this tiny country of six million.

Renewal: Corregidor Island

visitors observing artillery piece on Corregidor Island
It was my grandson’s first visit to the Philippines. What better way to introduce him to this land, than to plunge him right away into the historic sea of this country’s fight for freedom during World War II? The island bastion of Corregidor was the site of the Americans and Filipinos' last stand in 1942 in the Philippines.

The Road to Hana: The Road More Traveled -- and With Good Reason

Hana Highway winding among the Maui coast
Just as the queasiness in my stomach from the continuous onslaught of curves and cutbacks along the narrow uphill road began to subside, we rounded yet another 180-degree bend. The first waterfall with whipped cream waters dripping down deep-creviced cleavages appeared by the roadside, its beauty washing away all my remaining reservations.

A Magical Walk Through Hemingway’s Paris

the La Rotonde cafe on Boulevard du Montparnasse, Paris
Magically enchanting and much-loved Paris, the Urban Empress of Europe, remains eternally young and amorous. Occasionally vain, always passionate, and with a long and turbulent history, the legendary city has a special flair for life that has captivated many of the world’s most inspired artistic talent.

Angelina Jolie Interview - Part 1: Frank Talk on Her Directorial Debut

Angelina Jolie
What can you say about Angelina Jolie that hasn't already been said? She is the most famous, most photographed woman in the world whose significant other, Brad Pitt, is equally as famous as both an actor and activist. In addition to this award-winning actress' films generating big box office, her humanitarian activities are legion and have culminated in her debut as writer/director/producer of "The Land of Blood of Honey."

Dominican Republic: Outdoor Adventure on a Grand Scale

Iguana Mama's waterfall escapade
First things first. No waterslide at any waterpark will ever be the same again – not after cascading down real waterfalls in the Dominican Republic. The waterfall escapade – billed as 27 Waterfalls, though that’s really a misnomer, as it’s more like 10 waterfalls flowing into 27 pools of water – is only one of a multitude of outdoor adventures offered by Iguana Mama.

The Calgary Folk Fest: A Distribution of Heterogeneity in Free Spaces

musicians doing a workshop onstage at the Calgary Folk Fest
At the Calgary Folk Fest, the observer/ participant becomes half-starved and half-filled up. Split almost right down the middle. The starved half must move and interpret new territories, areas and stages. The filled-up half seems more satisfied with the stable condition, the sedentary condition, the lawn chairs.

By Frank Mazer

woman leading horse at Hoppegarten Racetrack
Powerful horses, with jockeys astride in their brilliant silk colors, are loping towards me. I stand in the middle of the turf track staring through the camera viewfinder while my "All Access Press Pass" clings to my wrist. The brilliant green splendor of the scene captivates me.

When the Blues community reflects back on 2011, it will be with great sadness. We lost so many incredibly gifted musicians during the year. Time Travel Oligarchy

Some argue that the United States is a failed empire that is descending into a doomed corporatist oligarchy. A Food & Wine Tour of Alcala

a bottle of white wine at the Parador de Alcala de Henares
The famed Spanish actor and cookbook author, Juan Echanove, is said to have “the soul of a chef.” His culinary travels throughout Spain have convinced him that “Spain is a country worth eating” - a country whose character can be best understood through gastronomy. I’ve traveled many regions of Spain, drinking the wines and eating the local foods, and I’m convinced Juan Echanove is right.

Juneau – “Alaska's Wilderness Capital City"

view of a street ini downtown Juneau
Let's face it, Alaska is a big place. With over 3,000 rivers and more than 100,000 glaciers, the state is one-fifth the size of the continental United States and two-and-one-half times the size of Texas. Vast expanses of wilderness encompass Alaska, with millions of acres of national parkland and wildlife refuges.

America's Meanest Airlines: 2011

We've compiled a list of the airlines that could stand to improve their customer service, based on the recently released 2011 Airline Quality Rating (AQR) report. The report covers 16 domestic carriers and its methodology factors in several common complaint areas, including mishandled baggage, flight delays and involuntary denied boardings (a.k.a. "getting bumped"). Also note: We've ranked regional airlines separately because of their tendency to score lower.

New Trend in the Hotel Industry Enables Hotels to Move Unused Inventory and Save Consumers Money on Their Next Hotel Booking

A new site, BackBid.com, has created the concept of “backbidding” -- in other words, getting discounts on hotel rooms that travelers have already booked through other channels. Unlike flash sales, “backbidding” is a way for consumers to secure discounts without the potential loss of booking a non-refundable stay for a future date. Since they already have confirmed travel plans, there is no downside in trying to find a better deal on their upcoming stay.

What You Need to Know About Airline Miles

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance helps you untangle the details of airline miles programs with six helpful tips:

  • Pick the right program.
  • Put all your eggs in one basket.
  • Bag the miles and buy the ticket.
  • Keep your miles alive.
  • Rack up miles on the ground.
  • Know when to fold ‘em.

There are an abundance of frequent-flier miles programs available that promise the consumer perks while traveling, such as fewer bag fees, on-flight freebies and free flights all over the country. But taking advantage of these benefits may seem impossible because of the strict rules and regulations some airlines attach to their frequent-flier programs.

Here are more details.

Deb's poetry break

Sunflower Sutra
by Allen Ginsberg

I walked on the banks of the tincan banana dock and sat down under the huge shade of a Southern Pacific locomotive to look for the sunset over the box house hills and cry.

Jack Kerouac sat beside me on a busted rusty iron pole, companion, we thought the same thoughts of the soul, bleak and blue and sad-eyed, surrounded by the gnarled steel roots of trees of machinery.

The only water on the river mirrored the red sky, sun sank on top of final Frisco peaks, no fish in that stream, no hermit in those mounts, just ourselves rheumy-eyed and hung-over like old bums on the riverbank, tired and wily.

Look at the Sunflower, he said, there was a dead gray shadow against the sky, big as a man, sitting dry on top of a pile of ancient sawdust--

--I rushed up enchanted--it was my first sunflower, memories of Blake--my visions--Harlem

and Hells of the Eastern rivers, bridges clanking Joes greasy Sandwiches, dead baby carriages, black treadless tires forgotten and unretreaded, the poem of the riverbank, condoms & pots, steel knives, nothing stainless, only the dank muck and the razor-sharp artifacts passing into the past--

The Caesar Salad

Caesar salad

Today, the whole world knows of the Caesar Salad -- a salad generally consisting of romaine lettuce and croutons, dressed with parmesan cheese, lemon juice, olive oil, egg, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper. Curiously enough, many people attribute its birthplace to the nation of Italy. Most dispute this claim, and credit the Caesar Salad's creation to restaurateur Caesar Cardini.
